Once all of the windows have been framed and you are satisfied with all the sizes the windows can be ordered. Almost all window companies now use custom sizes so there is no need to attempt to make the windows standard sizes expect if you are on a tight budget and using a window company that does provide standard sizes ( in this case they will be less expensive then custom sizes, if this is the case be sure to obtain there RO sizes in advance as most window companies no longer follow a standard RO size). The operation of the windows should already have been confirmed at this point, however as ordering it its best to do one final confirmation on site in front of the framed up windows to make sure everything makes sense.

With HRV and AC you will not need a lot of operable windows however it is nice to have at least 1 operable window in each room. Remember when ordering 1 operable window in a set of windows that unless you order it with a balanced sash the window will have a thicker frame then the other window. Windows that are going to be within 12″ of the floor will need to be tempered, windows over tubs and showers need to be tempered, side lights to doors need to be tempered and in some cases if the building is on a tight lot and close to the neighbor the side yard windows also need to be tempered. These are important to review with the supplier before ordering to avoid potential costs and delays.

Most suppliers are very familiar with these rules and will help you with the order. If they don’t seem to know these rules it may be best to switch to a supplier with a more knowledgeable sales rep unless you are aware of all the code requirements for the windows. If you are building a house in a area that does not require fire sprinklers egress is also required for all bedrooms, this has a very specific set of requirements and its best to use a window company that is very familiar with these rules otherwise the chance of making a mistake is very high. In some areas obscured glass may be used and as there is quite a few types its best to get a sample from the supplier and approving it before placing the order. skylites are often ordered from the window supplier and these are still done in standard sizes for example a 2′ x 4′ skylight will have a RO of 22 1/2″ x 46 1/2″ ( the RO will always be 1 1/2″ less then the size of the skylight).

The type of window should already have been chosen, wood, vinyl, aluminum, etc. however the colour will need to be confirmed and its best to have other samples with you to confirm the final colour selection, some suppliers have a range of standard colours and others only have a few and have significant up charges for special colours so these are all factors in making a decision. Once the order has been confirmed with the supplier they will typically ask for a deposit and establish a schedule when the windows are to be delivered. They will also provide shop drawings of the windows and you will need to carefully review these and sign off that they are correct. Although framers typically know how to install most types of windows ask the supplier for their installation instructions and ensure these are being followed carefully by the framer or the window installer.
