Now that drywall is complete you are ready to have your painter come in and prime all drywall areas. Priming is a necessary step for painting as it seals the surface so paint adheres to the surface instead of soaking into the gypsum board. The walls must be clean of dust and a thorough inspection of all drywall is necessary before beginning the priming process.<\/p>\n

Although priming is a simple procedure it is important for you and your painter to properly prepare for this. Spraying is a very fast way to prime and does a great job of covering the surfaces without leaving brush or roller marks. When spraying it is not only important to have clean walls and ceiling but clean floors and everything must be masked off properly before spraying. Spending this time now will avoid hours of trying to clean paint spray off windows or any other finished products that are present in the home.<\/p>\n

Selecting a good primer is also important, a primer designed specifically for new drywall is best. Most primers are tintable and if the using dark colours you can tint the primer to minimize the number of coats required after the primer has been applied. Priming can be done in 1 coat and further coats of primer will not do a better job as once the gypsum is sealed further sealing is not beneficial. Another item to note is the stain blocking primer such as kilz is not necessary for new construction as there should not be any stains on your gypsum board. Level 5 primers are available and will leave a 10 to 15 mil dry film to create a smother finish. After priming is complete this is another great chance to inspect the quality of the drywall and see if any further work is required.<\/p>\n<\/div>
